Students were asked to answer a writing into the day question on Google Classroom. I then responded to their answers to connect with students. I have been saving all of their answers on a google sheet to store student information.

Student Pride in Work

Students co-created a tool kit for editing their writing from their in-class discussions. We used their work to shape the rubric for their class and as a resource for their writing.

Managing Classroom Proceedures
I have been using a slide in PowerPoint to illustrate the before class expectations and to minimize transition time in assignments and instruction. I will also verbalize these at the beginning of class and answer questions about expectations and upcoming assignments.

Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport
I created a nonfiction writing club so that students who were interested in writing could learn and grow with their peers outside of the standard class time. In my advisory students strengthened their writing skills and their classroom community. They edited one anothers papers.

Establishing a culture for learning
I hosted an author share with my students for their final nonfiction memoir assignment. I brought donuts and students volunteered to read their nonfiction memoirs out loud for the class. I have included an image of the students who chose to share.

Organizing physical space
After spring break I created a new seating chart to try and place students in a more productive seating arrangement. In this, I created twelve tables of four so that each group had the same amount of members in it. I also have seen that a few of my disinterested students are more engaged with the new seats.

Managing student behavior
After spring break I created a new policy for cellphone use in the classroom. Students are now required to keep their phones in their backpack so that they do not use them during the class day. I have found that this succeeded when I framed the new policy as a classroom respect policy. We are putting our phones away so that we can honor and respect our classmates and their learning. With our phones away we are best able to engage and collaborate with others. We can use our phones after collaborative work and after people are done speaking.
